iPhone Hearing Test App

Take a Home Hearing Test in 5 Simple Steps

Tinni offers a comprehensive pure-tone frequency hearing test that you can take right from your iPhone. Learn how our professional-style online hearing test alternative checks for hearing loss accurately and safely.

01

Headphone & Setup

A reliable hearing test requires a good environment and proper equipment. The app first detects your connected headphones. If you are using Bluetooth devices, the app notes this (as Bluetooth can introduce latency and frequency alteration). You will be reminded to find a quiet space before proceeding.

02

Reference Tone & Fit Check

Before measuring thresholds, the app plays a 1 kHz reference tone.

  • Volume Guidance: The app displays your device volume, suggesting an ideal range (40–80%) for the most accurate results.
  • Comfort Check: You confirm the tone is comfortably audible.
  • Fit Check: You must respond to a tone within 4 seconds to confirm your headphones are properly seated and you understand the task.
03

Threshold Search

The core of the screening uses the clinical Modified Hughson-Westlake method. We test 8 standard frequencies per ear (250 Hz to 8 kHz), including the 3 kHz and 6 kHz markers critical for noise-induced hearing loss.

The test features true stereo routing (the silent ear outputs zero amplitude) and approximately 12% of presentations are silent catch trials to detect guessing and ensure high accuracy.

04

Hearing Test Results

Once completed, you receive actionable hearing test results:

  • Hearing Number: A single, easy-to-understand score representing your better-ear pure-tone average (PTA) in the speech frequencies.
  • Severity Tier: An indicative ASHA-based classification (e.g., Normal, Mild, Moderate) to help you understand potential hearing loss.
  • Audiogram Chart: A standard clinical chart plotting your thresholds (dB HL) across all frequencies.
05

Save & Export

Easily export your audiogram as a one-page PDF to share with your audiologist. With a single tap, you can also seamlessly sync your hearing test results directly into Apple Health, tracking your hearing sensitivity over time alongside your other health metrics.

Disclaimer: This is a screening tool, not a medical-grade diagnostic. Results depend on device volume, headphone type, and listening environment. Consult a licensed audiologist for a clinical assessment if you are concerned about your hearing.
